Is Your Outdoor Kitchen Ready For Spring?

Spring is just around the corner and that means that cooking outdoors will be most people’s preferred method for cooking dinner. Backyards will soon fill up with sunshine, fireflies, and people enjoying a great BBQ. Outdoor kitchens are extremely popular and we understand why. This great kitchen might be in your backyard and not actually inside your home, but that doesn’t mean you can forget to clean or maintain it. Metro Marble & Granite knows that outdoor kitchens may require less maintenance, but we know that there are a few things you need to do to make sure you can enjoy your outdoor kitchen at the Lake of the Ozarks for years to come.

Wipe Down The Countertops

When most people are creating their dream outdoor kitchen, they choose natural materials, such as stone or granite for their counters. Both granite and stone offer a variety of different colors and textures. While this is great for the design of your outdoor kitchen, you should keep in mind that these materials are porous. With porous countertops means the possibility of staining. For the most part, the sun and rain will help prevent staining, but you should also seal your countertops and wipe up any spills quickly. If your outdoor kitchen doesn’t have an overhead structure, you should consider covering your countertops during the winter months to protect them from the freezing temperature and the ice and snow.

Don’t Stress Over Cleaning Appliances

Most appliances in outdoor kitchens are stainless steel and for good reason. Stainless steel looks great, but it is also resistant to rust and corrosion. Stainless steel is a durable material but it isn’t completely indestructible. To clean stainless steel appliances, a rinse with warm soapy water is all that is needed. You should follow the grain of the metal and then completely dry the appliance. You won’t need to use any chemical cleaners and you’ll want to use soft rags.

Protect Your Outdoor Furniture

It may not be one of the first things you think about when it comes down to creating your outdoor kitchen, but furniture plays a big role in completing your backyard. It’s important to keep your outdoor furniture out of the rain and extreme weather by covering it with a vinyl cover or bringing it indoors. You can clean vinyl and fabric components with a mild, all-purpose cleaner. Harsh cleaners aren’t necessary and they can actually do more harm than good.

Don’t Forget The Fireplace

If your backyard sanctuary includes a fireplace, you should make sure that it stays tidy. Your fireplace may never actually be “clean”, it’s a fireplace after all, but you should make sure it is free of any debris. Use a metal scoop and metal container to regularly remove ashes from the fireplace. You should also consider purchasing a cover for your fireplace’s chimney – the inside of the chimney isn’t sealed like the outside. This means that it is more vulnerable to damage from water and other debris. You should also make sure your chimney is free and clear and it’s important to regularly get it cleaned.
