The Big Debate: Granite Or Quartz?

When it comes to remodeling your current kitchen into your dream kitchen, you want to be absolutely sure that you are picking the right materials and these materials will stand up to the test of time. Metro Marble & Granite knows that when it comes down to kitchen countertops, there’s nothing like the debate between granite and quartz. Is one really better than the other, or do people just prefer the look of one material? We are here to break down each material and show the differences between the two.

Quartz – This material is not 100% natural, in fact, quartz is a manmade material. These countertops are created by using 95% ground natural quartz and 5% polymer resins.
Granite – This material is a very hard stone and it is 100% natural. Granite is mined from quarries all around the world, cut down to proper sizes, and then polished to the desired finish.

Quartz vs. Granite

Appearance -
Quartz: quartz has risen in popularity in part due to its appearance. Quartz looks like natural stone, but it allows the homeowner to customize their design. Granite does offer many options in terms of its appearance, but you may have to search high and low for the right color. Quartz, on the other hand, makes the color selection process a lot easier.
Granite: granite does come in different colors as well as patterns. If you’re looking for a subtle countertop to compliment your kitchen design, or if you want something that stands out, granite can do both. One thing to keep in mind is that no two granite countertops are the same. If you’re looking for something that is cohesive, quartz might be the better choice.

Price –
Quartz: depending on the quality of quartz and style of countertop, the average cost to purchase and install quartz countertops is anywhere between $1,500 and $5,500. Engineered quartz is heavier than other stone countertops, so the installer needs to make sure the cabinets can withstand the weight.
Granite: the average cost to purchase granite and have it installed can cost between $2,000 and $4,000.

Maintenance –
Quartz: you’ll want to clean up any spills on quartz countertops with soap and water. When it comes to maintenance, that’s about it for quartz counters. They are manmade and aren’t porous, so there’s no need to seal or reseal and that means bacteria and germs will not take over your counters.
Granite: granite countertops should be cleaned each day with soap and warm water. Any spills should be cleaned up ASAP to prevent any risk of staining. You will also need to make sure your counters are sealed when they are installed, and it’s important to reseal them once a year.

Durability –
Quartz: quartz is a stronger and more durable material than granite. Quartz is nearly indestructible. It’s also not porous, so it’s easy to keep your countertops clean and bacteria free. Be careful with heat, quartz can be damaged by excessive heat, so it’s important to use pot holders.
Granite: granite is a durable material and it’s also resistant to heat. It is porous, so it’s important to keep your eye on any potential stains and clean them up quickly.

When we review all of this information, it seems like quartz is the winner. It’s easier to maintain, it tends to last longer, and since it’s manmade, it’s easier to customize. Metro Marble & Granite knows that both are great materials for kitchen or bath countertops.
