Spring Clean Your Countertops

Now is the time for spring cleaning and preparing your house for the summer months ahead. Whether you have already started your spring cleaning, or are dreading starting it, Metro Marble & Granite has a few helpful tips to keep in mind when cleaning your countertops. That’s right, your countertops, whether they are granite, quartz, or marble, could all use a good spring cleaning.

Granite Countertops

Check the Seal
Maybe it’s been a while since your countertops were sealed? That’s okay! Spring is a great time to check the condition of the seal on your countertops and reseal if necessary. Sealing your countertops are extremely important in protecting them against stains and any unwanted marks. It’s important to reseal them once a year. If you use your countertops frequently and are a little rougher with them, you may need to seal them more frequently.

Tip: You can check to see if your counters need to be resealed with the water test. Place a few drops of water on top of your countertop. If the drops bead up and look like raindrops on a freshly waxed car, then you don’t need to reseal. If those water drops soak into the counter after a few moments, then it’s time to reseal.

Occasional Disinfecting
Wiping down your countertops daily is great, but when you need to kick it up a notch and truly kill some germs, you can buy special granite disinfecting chemicals, or you can go the DIY route. If you want to create your own, you simply need to mix equal parts of water with 91% isopropyl alcohol into a spray bottle. This mixture not only disinfects, but it will also shine the granite. Once you’ve mixed together the solution, spray it onto the counters and let it sit for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, you will need to use warm water to rinse the cleaner. Make sure you dry the counters with a soft cloth.

Tip: When drying the counters, a microfiber cloth is best. Also, do not use bleach-based cleaners, they are not safe for your countertops.

Spills
With granite countertops, it’s important to clean up spills as soon as they happen. Spills, especially with wine or ketchup, can cause damage to the sealer and even the granite. When cleaning up spills, always use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth. This will help prevent staining, but it will also protect your counters and the sealer on them.

Quartz Countertops

No Seal Required
When it comes to the manmade material of quartz, these countertops do not need to be sealed. Not having to seal countertops can be a deciding factor for people when choosing the type of material. Quartz, for the most part, resists staining when liquids are spilled. While it may not permanently stain, it’s still important to wipe up any spills right after they happen. When cleaning quartz counters, all you need is mild dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth.

Deep Cleaning
Wiping down your countertops daily and cleaning up any spills and messes in a timely manner will satisfy your daily cleaning requirements. Deep cleaning your countertops each month is always a great idea. To deep clean your quartz countertops, use a nonabrasive surface cleaner and let it sit on your countertops for a few minutes. Then wipe away the cleaner with a non-scratch sponge.

Marble Countertops

Seal Your Countertops
Sealing a porous countertop is extremely important. Sealing marble will repel staining agents, but it won’t make your counters waterproof. When choosing your marble countertops, Metro Marble & Granite can help you decide which is the best sealant for you and your new counters. It’s important to reseal your countertops as often as necessary. When water no longer beads on the surface, you will know your counters need to be resealed.

Clean Your Countertops
When it comes down to cleaning your marble, you will want to avoid using any cleaners that are abrasive or any that are acidic. The best way to regularly clean your marble countertops is to use warm soapy water and a soft microfiber cloth. Remember to clean up any spills as soon as they happen.
