National Simplicity Day

June 12th is National Simplicity Day, and minimalism is definitely a trend these days. Metro Marble & Granite is always on top of the trends, and in home design especially, less is more. The best countertop company at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few tips on how to keep your beautiful countertops the center of attention and simplify your spaces.

IN THE KITCHEN

The kitchen is often the “drop-zone” for all clutter, especially if you have a family. This can be incredibly frustrating when you’re trying to prepare a meal or get ready for company. Often times, the things in the kitchen don’t have actual homes – they just live on the countertops.

Tip 1: Clear the countertops. Your stunning, stone countertops should be able to shine, not be covered up with clutter. Storing appliances that aren’t used all day or every day, such as a toaster or blender, in hidden storage space can open up your area immensely.

Tip 2: Designate homes. Everything in your home should have its own place where it belongs. Be sure to establish these locations with your family so everyone is on the same page. If mail, lunch boxes, keys, etc. don’t have proper homes, they will always end up on your kitchen counter.

Tip 3: Minimize your “things.” A rule of thumb is to allow for four additional guests. If you have four family members, eight plate settings should be a safe bet. There’s no need to have fifteen plate settings if it doesn’t match your lifestyle. There’s no sense in storing something that doesn’t get regular use, so if you find yourself not knowing why you own something, it might be best to toss it out.

IN THE BATHROOM

Especially if you don’t have an ample amount of counter or storage space in your bathroom, things can pile up easily. It’s a good idea to regularly declutter and purge your bathroom of unused products like lotions or soaps. Your countertops and sink need to be cleaned regularly in your bathroom just as they do in the kitchen. Soap scum, toothpaste residue, and hair products can easily take over your beautiful sink and countertop.

Tip 1: Determine how many towels you actually need. Take a look at your towels and washcloths and see if they are in good condition. A good rule of thumb is to keep two towels per person in your family and keep two extra towels on hand if you have guests to your home.

Tip 2: Toss expired products. When it comes to products, it’s easy to keep buying and buying, even though you might have several of the same products at home. Hair, skin, and nail products can easily pile up! Be sure to check the expiration on your products to ensure that you’re being safe using it.

Tip 3: Store counter clutter. There are definitely some necessary items that need to be placed on top of your bathroom counter, i.e. toothbrushes, hand soap, etc. Keep your counter clutter to a minimum by storing products under the sink or in drawers.

IN THE LIVING ROOM

When it comes to your living room, your stone fireplace surround elevates the space on its own. But to really take your space to the next level in terms of simplicity, there are a few steps you can take.

Tip 1: Simplify your color palette. If you’re a fan of throw pillows and blankets, this is a great opportunity to bring some life into your space without overdoing it. Two or three small throw pillows on your couch can pull together a room like none other. If you have brightly colored walls, stay neutral with your furniture and accents. If you have simple and neutral walls and furniture, try a pop of color for accent pieces.

Tip 2: Be kind to your mantle. If you have a fireplace and a gorgeous Metro Marble & Granite fireplace surround, you most likely also have a mantle. Be careful when decorating your mantle – you don’t want to overload it! Remember, less is more, and you can often make a bigger impact with a simple, but beautiful piece of artwork.

Tip 3: Make your storage spaces stylish. If you have stacks of magazines and piles of blankets strewn across your living room, try consolidating by putting the magazines in a rack and your blankets in a trendy basket. Not only will it designate a home for these items, but it is also a fun and stylish way to store your things.

For National Simplicity Day, take a few moments and try to simplify your life, your home, and your space. It’s your chance to decide what stands out in your life! Your investment in your spectacular countertops, sinks, and fireplace surround is something you want to shine in your home. Metro Marble & Granite can help beautify your space!
