The Host's Guide to Clean Countertops

Summer is the most popular time to host a family reunion, and we’re in the midst of peak summertime. If you’re planning on hosting a family reunion or get together at your home this summer, it’s important that you keep your countertops in mind. The kitchen is a great place to bond and reconnect with family members, but it also contains a beautiful investment of yours. The best countertop company at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few handy tips to keep in mind when preparing food or hanging out in your kitchen. Metro Marble & Granite urges you to keep your stone countertops safe this summer when hosting a large party.

1. Seal or Re-Seal Your Natural Stone Countertops

Natural stones include granite, onyx, marble, and travertine. Natural stone is characteristically porous, so it’s a good idea to have your countertops sealed at least a week before company visits. Sealing your natural stone, granite and marble in particular, can help prevent staining and discoloration, while also adding a beautiful shine to the stone. Metro Marble & Granite sells Professional Impregnator or sealer if needed.

2. Use Cutting Boards and Hot Pads

Even though both natural stone and quartz are incredibly strong and durable (making them great for kitchen countertops!), cutting directly on the surface can potentially scratch the stone or damage the sealant. If you have natural stone countertops, they can take the heat. When it comes to quartz, although it is also incredibly durable, high heat can lead to discoloration. To be on the safe side, we recommend using hot pads on your stone countertops to protect from damage.

3. Set Out Coasters

Not only are coasters a great and homey addition to your kitchen and dining room, coasters can protect your beautiful countertops from those infamous rings and sweat from drinks. Your guests will be grateful to have something stylish to set their cups on, and you’ll be grateful that your countertops are safe!

4. Clean Spills Quickly

When a large group of people gets together, spills are inevitable. Children aren’t the only ones who sometimes make messes! When these accidents happen on your countertops, clean the spills as fast as possible. The porous surface, even if recently sealed, has the potential to stain. If something other than a drink spills, such as an acidic liquid like citrus or vinegar, or juice from raw meat, clean it up immediately as well. Acidic liquids can cause etching in the sealant and raw meat contains bacteria that can seep into the porous surface.

5. Relax!

Your beautiful countertops are the centerpiece of your kitchen, and they will get the most use out of the whole area. Natural stone is unrivaled for warmth, strength, and resilience. Quartz is known for its strength, durability, and cleanliness. Even though it’s a good idea to be cautious with your stone countertops, they can withstand a lot, even your entire family!

Taking good care of your gorgeous investment will keep it looking beautiful for years and years to come. When the time comes for you to host the family reunion, call Metro Marble & Granite, the best countertop company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and rest assured that you’ll impress every family member! With your beautiful and durable stone countertop, you won’t have to be afraid of everyone hanging out in the kitchen this summer.
