Caring For Your Natural Stone Countertops Before The Holidays!

The holidays are upon us and if you are hosting any holiday parties, you may want to take time for some extra care for your natural stone countertops at the Lake of the Ozarks. You will want your kitchen to be in tip-top shape when your guest arrives. It's time to start cleaning and making sure that your countertops don't need to be sealed before spills happen from all that delicious food you will be preparing for your guests. Read on for a few tips for getting your countertops holiday ready.

Cleaning Your Natural Stone

Right before the holidays is a great time to do a little extra cleaning. When you are cleaning tile or natural stone, you should always use products that are specially formulated for those particular surfaces. A lot of the basic and general-purpose cleaners contain acidic ingredients, like bleach and ammonia. These types of ingredients are abrasive and can even break down the seal on your countertop and damage the stone surfaces. These specially formulated cleaners are not rare or hard to find. Most can be found in the bigger box stores that we shop at or even online. When cleaning these countertops, it’s always a good idea to use top-quality products.

Resealing Your Granite Countertops

To keep your countertops in their best condition and to keep their shine, it’s important that they have a seal on them. Natural stone countertops usually need to be sealed once every year to two years in order to maintain their protective barrier. The frequency of sealer application depends on the sealer you use and the normal maintenance and care of your countertops. Sealer doesn’t just keep them shiny, but it also keeps them stain-resistant. Why not give your countertops a nice shine right before the holidays.

Keep It Clean

In order to help your granite countertops last, it’s best to clean them daily and to clean up any spills right away. When you are cooking for the holidays, cleaning as you go is the best method to ensure your countertops don't stain. If you have just resealed them, then you won't have to be quite as careful with spills. These countertops may be heat resistant, but it’s never a good idea to place hot pans directly on the countertop for an extended period of time. You should also never directly cut or use knives on the surface, it’s best to use a cutting board. Other steps you can take are using coasters for cups, vases and any other decorative items that will be sitting on your countertop for an extended period of time.
