Granite Myths

Granite is a mysterious stone. There are misconceptions and myths surrounding the natural stone, and as its popularity continues to increase, people have created preconceived ideas and made assumptions. Good thing Metro Marble & Granite is here to share the facts! We're the countertop experts at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we're excited to share and debunk these five myths. Read on to be mind blown!

MYTH: Granite countertops are absorbent.
FACT: Although granite countertops are porous, they are not absorbent. We recommend that you have your countertops sealed to prevent any staining, but it's not likely that a spill will immediately soak into your counter! We do suggest cleaning up spills as quickly as possible because of the porous nature, but granite countertops are NOT absorbent.

MYTH: Once granite is stained, it's there forever.
FACT: If you do happen to accidentally stain your granite countertops, no need to fear. It's actually likely that you can undo the damage quite easily. Of course, you'll want to catch and treat the stain as quickly as possible, but most stains can be removed by using a mild soap and warm water.

MYTH: Granite countertops will lose their shine.
FACT: Nope! Though other types of natural stone may show wear and tear over time, granite should not lose its unique shine over the years. Granite is typically scratch resistant and is also resistant to wear and tear from daily use.

MYTH: Granite contains harmful bacteria because of its porous nature.
FACT: Your granite countertop will contain no more bacteria than any other food preparation surface. If granite was unsafe to use because of this, it wouldn't be allowed in the kitchen! If you're concerned about this myth, make sure that you have your countertops sealed regularly and use an anti-bacterial (non-abrasive!) dish soap and warm water to clean them.

MYTH: Granite countertops all have seams.
FACT: Your granite countertops CAN be seamless! There are some pre-planning steps you need to take if your goal is to go seamless, but it can be done. You will need to coordinate with our knowledgeable staff at Metro Marble & Granite to find a slab that is long enough and wide enough to accommodate your dimensions. If going seamless is your top priority, you might need to consider adjusting your layout depending on the stone that is available. You'll need to work closely with MMG to find the right balance.
