Quartz FAQs
Where does quartz come from?
Quartz can be found all over the world, but Brazil and
Arkansas have two of the largest natural quartz mines. Even though quartz is a
widely occurring mineral, high quality and pure crystals are a rare find.
Quartz is used in glass making and it’s a vital component in
fiberglass. It is also used in sandblasting and sandpaper production. Many
electronics contain quartz. Things like watches, televisions, and cellphones
contain quartz. Quartz is the most varied mineral because it comes in a variety
of colors and forms which makes it one of the most useful natural substances.
Special types of resins are mixed within the quartz during
productions which helps make quartz countertops resistant to stains. They are
extremely durable and are a nonporous surface. This means that any substance
that may stain will not settle in small pores.
Do quartz countertops scratch easily?
Because of their durability, quartz countertops are scratch
resistant under normal wear and tear. They are not indestructible though. It’s
always recommended to use a cutting board when using knives.
Quartz countertops never need to be sealed – unlike granite,
which needs a new protective top coat at least once a year. Because of this,
quartz countertops are low maintenance.
Compared to granite and other natural stone countertops,
quartz is not as heat resistant. The resin that is in the quartz surface makes
it vulnerable to direct heat. You should use hot pads for hot pans or anything
taken directly out of the oven.
Why are quartz countertops so popular?
Quarts is so durable, that it’s also called “engineered
stone”. Unlike other mine natural stone, quartz is produced in a factory. Here
are a few reasons why quartz is a popular countertop choice:
- Quartz is less likely to chip compared to granite or marble.
- Quartz can be made in different colors – one that suits everyone’s style and taste.
- Quartz is a non-porous material, so it doesn’t harbor bacteria in any tiny gaps or cracks.
- Quartz is stain resistant.
